Description

Tanzanite is a brownish-green, blue to blue-violet gemstone variety of the mineral zoisite, a mineral from the sorosilicate group.

Tanzanite is a violet-blue gemstone named after Tanzania, where its only deposit in the world is located. The location is located near the city of Arusha near the Mount Meru volcano, about 50 km as the crow flies southwest of the foot of the Kilimanjaro massif. In addition to its beautiful color, its important property is trichroite (different shades of color depending on the orientation of the crystal). It is one of the younger gemstones. Commonly found tanzanites have a light blue, light purple or brownish-green color. The dark blue, rich color is achieved by heating the stone. However, this treatment does not reduce the value of the stone among gemologists. Today, all richly colored gemstone tanzanites are considered fired.

The name tanzanite was first given to it by the famous jeweler Tiffany, who also declared it to be the most beautiful blue stone discovered in the last 2000 years
Tanzanite is referred to as the gemstone of the 20th century

Tanzanite – a natural cut gemstone from Tanzania

Tanzanite is a rare blue-violet variety of zoisite, discovered in the 1960s in Tanzania, which is still the only known deposit of this mineral in the world. Thanks to its exceptional color – a combination of sapphire blue, purple and sometimes even subtle red reflections – it quickly became one of the most sought-after gemstones of today.

This cut stone represents top quality, suitable for jewelry and collector's purposes. Thanks to its unique geological rarity, tanzanite is among the stones with high investment potential.

Main advantages:

origin: Tanzania (Merelani Hills area, near Kilimanjaro volcano)

color: deep blue-violet, typical of high-quality tanzanites

cut: precise facet cut for maximum brilliance

rarity: found in only one location in the world

investment potential: demand is growing, reserves of deposits are limited

mineralogical data:

chemical composition: Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)₃(OH) (zoisite)

crystal system: orthorhombic

hardness: 6.5–7 Mohs

refractive index: 1.685–1.707

density: ~3.35 g/cm³

pleochroism: pronounced – blue, purple, reddish

Tanzanite is valued not only for its beauty, but also for its unique origin story. Experts estimate that deposits in Tanzania will be exhausted in the future, which makes it an attractive investment stone.

What is tanzanite?
Tanzanite is a rare blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite (Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)₃(OH)), found only in Tanzania.

Why is tanzanite so rare?

Because it comes from only one deposit in the world (Merelani Hills, Tanzania). Its reserves are limited and are expected to be depleted.

What are the properties of tanzanite?

Hardness 6.5–7 Mohs, pronounced pleochroism (blue, purple and red from different angles), great shine and brilliance when cut.

Is tanzanite used in jewelry?

Yes, it is one of the popular gemstones in luxury jewelry. However, it is recommended to protect it from impacts due to its lower hardness than, for example, sapphire.

Does tanzanite have investment value?

Yes. Thanks to its unique location and growing demand, tanzanite is one of the sought-after investment gemstones.
