Description

Vanadinite is a rare secondary mineral that contains vanadium

Vanadinite is a lead chromium vanadate that is formed by the oxidation of galena. It is red, brown, orange, yellow, translucent to opaque, diamond-like to honey-like luster, non-cleavable and brittle.

Vanadinite is often found in the form of crystals that can be in the shape of hexagonal columns or tetrahedra. This mineral is mined in various locations around the world, including Morocco, where it is widely distributed. Moroccan vanadinite is known for its beautiful red-orange color and well-developed crystals.

Color:
Most often deep red, orange, brownish-red or yellow.

Color depends on the vanadium content and impurities.

Crystal form:
Small, well-developed hexagonal crystals are typical, often grouped in druses or coatings.

Composition:
Chemical formula: Pb55(VO44)33Cl.
Contains lead, vanadium and chlorine.

Hardness:
It reaches a hardness of 3–4 on the Mohs scale, which means it is relatively soft.

Luster:
Glassy to resinous, which contributes to its attractive appearance.
