Description
Dioptase from the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most beautiful and sought-after minerals in the world. This extraordinary crystal is known for its intense emerald green color, high luster and distinctive crystal structure, which makes it a true collector's gem.
Mineralogical composition

Chemical formula: CuSiO₃ H₂O

Group: silicates (copper silicates)

Crystal system: trigonal

Hardness: 5 (Mohs scale)

Color: deep green to emerald (influence of copper)

Luster: vitreous

Transparency: transparent to translucent

Location – Congo (Kolwezi)

The Kolwezi area in the DR Congo is considered the world's highest quality source of dioptase. Crystals from this locality are valued for:

exceptional color saturation and purity,

well-developed crystal shapes,

high contrast to the parent rock,

collector's rarity and aesthetic value.

How dioptase is formed

Dioptas is formed in oxidation zones of copper deposits, where chemical reactions occur between:

copper (Cu),

silica compounds,

and water.

These processes take place over long geological periods and lead to the formation of crystals with a typical transparency and deep green color. Dioptase is a relatively fragile mineral, which further increases the value of well-preserved crystals.

History and significance

Dioptas was first described in 1797 by the French mineralogist René Just Haüy, who originally considered it to be an emerald. The name "dioptase" comes from the Greek dia (through) and optasthai (to see), referring to its transparency and internal structure.
Exceptionality and value in mineralogy

Dioptas is highly valued in the mineralogical world as:

a top quality collector's mineral,

an aesthetic exhibit for display cases and investment collections,

a mineral with a limited occurrence of quality crystals,

one of the most distinctively colored natural minerals ever.

Quality pieces from Congo are among the most sought-after on the world market and their value has been growing in the long term.

Character and effects

Dioptas is traditionally associated with:

harmonization of emotions and inner balance,

deepening of perception and concentration,

calm but deep energy,

connection with natural processes and inner stability.
