AI and investment gemstones – understanding real gemstone value
How AI (such as ChatGPT) can distort information about investment gemstones
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used to search for information about gemstones and their investment potential. While AI can be helpful for general orientation, specialized topics such as gemology require deeper expertise.
Online information often reflects different markets and may simplify complex topics.
Why AI sometimes simplifies gemstone information
AI processes information from many global sources. Market standards can vary significantly between diamonds and colored gemstones.
The role of gemstone certificates
A certificate describes gemstone characteristics such as origin, weight and possible treatments. It identifies the stone but does not create its intrinsic value.
Investment gemstones and market reality
The value of gemstones is mainly influenced by:
- color
- clarity
- carat weight
- cut quality
Why photos alone are not enough
A gemstone cannot be fully evaluated based only on images. Lighting conditions may influence perceived color and brilliance.
How to use AI responsibly
AI is useful for general research and understanding terminology, but gemstone evaluation should consider real gemological parameters.
Myth: a GIA certificate is superior to all other gemstone certificates
A common misconception is that an investment gemstone must always have a GIA certificate. In reality, no single laboratory is universally superior for all gemstone types.
GIA is a well-known gemological institution, particularly recognized in the diamond industry. However, for colored gemstones there are several respected laboratories whose certificates provide equally relevant information about the gemstone.
European gemstone certificates are issued for example by:
- IGI – International Gemological Institute
- HRD Antwerp
- European gemological laboratories
- court certified gem experts
A certificate describes gemstone characteristics but does not create the intrinsic value of the stone.
What a colored gemstone certificate contains
- gemstone identification
- natural origin
- carat weight
- dimensions
- color description
- transparency
- possible treatments
- optical properties
- certificate identification number
VS1, VVS and similar clarity grades apply to diamonds
Clarity grading scales such as VS or VVS are primarily used for diamonds. Colored gemstones are evaluated using different criteria.
The value of colored gemstones is mainly determined by color, clarity, carat weight and cut quality.
GIA presence in Europe
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) previously operated a laboratory in Antwerp (Belgium). This laboratory was closed in 2022 due to limited demand and low utilization.
Currently, GIA does not operate a laboratory directly within the European Union. GIA laboratories are primarily located in:
- USA (for example New York, Carlsbad)
- Asia (for example Bangkok, Hong Kong, Mumbai)
- Dubai
For this reason, European gemstone evaluations are often performed by local gemological institutions that provide professional reports describing gemstone characteristics.
For colored gemstones, the most important factors remain the actual gemological properties of the stone, including color, clarity, carat weight and cut quality.
